How to increase your ecommerce conversion rate

The checks we run first on every store, in order of impact. No email wall. Apply them yourself, or book a free audit and we will do it on your store.

Start with the money, not the homepage

Most conversion advice starts at the top of the funnel and stays there. We start at the step closest to the money, the checkout, and work backwards. A visitor who reached the checkout already wants to buy. If you lose them there, you are throwing away the most expensive traffic you have. Fix the bottom of the funnel first, then move up.

The order of impact

You can change a hundred things on a store. Most of them move nothing. These are the levers that move revenue, roughly in the order we check them.

  • Checkout friction: forced account creation, too many fields, surprise shipping cost, too few payment methods.
  • Page speed on mobile, especially the product page and the cart.
  • Clarity on the product page: the three buying questions answered above the fold.
  • Trust signals where the decision happens, not just in the footer.
  • Shipping and returns stated plainly, before the cart, not discovered at checkout.
  • A cart and checkout that work with one thumb on a phone.

Find where visitors drop, before you guess

Opinions are cheap. Before changing anything, look at where people actually leave. A funnel report shows the drop from product page to cart to checkout to order. Session recordings show why: the field they rage-click, the shipping line that makes them close the tab. Fix what the data points at, not what the loudest person in the room believes.

Checkout: the most expensive leak

The checkout is where intent turns into revenue or into an abandoned cart. The usual killers are predictable:

  • Forcing account creation before purchase. Offer guest checkout.
  • Asking for data you do not need. Every extra field costs you orders.
  • Hiding shipping cost until the last step. Show it early, or make it free above a threshold and say so.
  • Too few payment methods. The one your customer wanted was missing.

Product page: answer the three buying questions

Before anyone buys, they ask three things: is this right for me, can I trust you, and what happens after I pay. Answer them above the fold. Clear photos and a plain description for the first, reviews and real trust marks for the second, shipping and returns for the third. If a visitor has to scroll and hunt, you have already lost some of them.

Speed and mobile are not optional

Most ecommerce traffic is on a phone, and a slow store bleeds orders before the page even finishes loading. Measure the real load time of your product and cart pages on a mid-range phone, not on your office wifi. If the main content takes more than a couple of seconds to appear, that is costing you orders, and it is usually fixable.

Test, do not just ship

When you have traffic, do not trust a change because it feels better. Run it against the old version and measure. When you do not have the traffic for a clean test, start with the fixes that are obviously correct (guest checkout, visible shipping, faster pages) and measure the before and after in your own numbers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to increase my ecommerce conversion rate?

Fix the checkout first. Offer guest checkout, show shipping cost early, cut fields you do not need, and add the payment methods your customers ask for. The checkout is the step closest to the money, so a fix there pays back fastest.

How do I know where my store is losing visitors?

Look at a funnel report for the drop from product page to cart to checkout to order, then watch session recordings to see why. Change what the data points at, not what you assume.

Do I need a lot of traffic to improve conversion?

No. You need traffic for clean A/B tests, but the first round of fixes (guest checkout, visible shipping, faster pages, clearer product pages) are correct regardless and you measure them in your own before-and-after numbers.
