The ecommerce sales funnel

How the whole funnel works, from the first ad to the post-purchase upsell, and where it leaks. Apply it yourself, or book a free audit.

A funnel is a chain of pains and beliefs

A funnel takes a stranger from "I did not know I had this problem" to "I need this now". Before anyone buys, there are pains they need to feel (the problem, how bad it is, what it costs them) and beliefs they need to accept (this is why I have it, this is the solution, this brand is legit, it is worth the money). When all the pains are felt and all the beliefs accepted, they buy. This is why sending cold ad traffic straight to a product page no longer works, and why a good funnel plus a good offer is what lets you scale on cold traffic.

The pre-sell page

The most important part. A pre-sell page sits between the ad and the product page and does most of the work of agitating the pain and installing the beliefs. Make the reader see they really have the problem, feel it, worry about where it leads, understand its root cause, see why most solutions miss that cause, and see how your unique mechanism solves it. This is also the fix when ROAS drops as you scale.

The offer page

The pre-sell warms them; the offer page closes them by installing the last belief, that this is worth it. That means an irresistible offer, trust, the motivation the pre-sell built, and zero unanswered objections. It is also where you lift order value: pre-select the best bundle and label it, tier real gifts to bundle size, put cross-sells right above the button, and pre-select subscribe-and-save on anything consumable with a clear reason to. See the average order value playbook.

Retargeting

How you bring people back depends on where they left. If they left from the pre-sell page, run ads that push hard on the pain and the desired outcome, with social proof, back to the pre-sell page. If they left from the offer page, they are already warm, so bring them back to the offer with the objection or nudge that closes it.

Cart and post-purchase

The best time to grow an order is when the customer is in buying mode. In the cart, add cross-sells that complement what they are buying. Then the highest-converting moment in the whole funnel: right after the purchase, with a one-click upsell that gets faster results, longer-lasting results, or solves the next problem. See the retention playbook for turning that into repeat orders.

Great ads cannot save a broken funnel

Great ads with a weak funnel get you nothing, and a great funnel with weak ads gets you nothing. Build the chain, then feed it traffic.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always need a pre-sell page?

For cold traffic, almost always. Warm, brand-aware traffic can sometimes go straight to the product page, but cold traffic needs warming first. See why your ROAS drops as you scale.

What is the difference between a pre-sell page and a product page?

The pre-sell page educates and builds belief; the product page or offer page closes the sale. One warms, the other converts.

Where do most funnels leak?

Usually sending cold traffic straight to the product page with no pre-sell, and leaving the post-purchase upsell on the table. Those two fixes move the most.
